Open-Heart Surgery
Open-heart surgery requires years of training and practice, and you do not have to travel far to find this level of surgical expertise. The Lima Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute has board-certified heart surgeons with years of training in advanced cardiac surgery.
What is open-heart surgery?
Open-heart surgery generally refers to an operation in which the surgeon opens the chest and repairs areas of your heart or arteries. This often involves temporarily stopping your heart and allowing a heart-lung machine to provide oxygen-rich blood to your brain and other vital organs. Some newer surgical procedures can be performed with your heart beating and do not require large incisions. These minimally invasive procedures, like Lima Memorial’s Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), fall under this category.
What is the success rate of open heart surgery?
The success rate of open-heart surgeries varies from person to person, and your surgeon will advise you on your specific case. But open-heart surgery is one of the most commonly performed operations in the United States, with a high overall survival rate. There are a variety of types of open-heart surgeries, depending on the condition being treated and your overall health.
