Our Cancer Services

Medical Oncology

Medical oncology uses systemic treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy to treat cancer throughout the body. Lima Memorial’s medical oncologists personalize treatment regimens based on tumor type, genetic markers and patient tolerance, with infusion services delivered locally.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology uses targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. Lima Memorial’s Radiation Oncology team treats patients using the Varian TrueBeam™ linear accelerator, a high-precision platform that delivers image-guided radiation therapy for a wide range of cancers.

Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology focuses on the removal of cancerous tumors. Lima Memorial surgeons perform tumor removal and biopsies across a range of cancer types, coordinating every case with medical and radiation oncology to deliver a unified, multidisciplinary treatment plan.

Cancer Diagnostics

Early, accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective cancer treatment. Lima Memorial’s Cancer Diagnostics program uses PET/CT scans, high-precision imaging and biopsy services to identify cancer at the earliest possible stage and guide treatment decisions.

AI-Powered Early Cancer Detection

AI-powered early cancer detection uses artificial intelligence to review completed imaging studies for incidental findings, such as potential lung nodules, that fall outside the original reason for the scan. Launched in 2025, Lima Memorial uses the Eon platform to automatically flag potential lung cancer findings, track patients with identified nodules and connect them to follow-up testing before symptoms develop.

Patient Navigation

Oncology nurse navigators are dedicated nurses who guide patients and families through every step of cancer care – from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship. Navigators coordinate appointments, explain treatment options and serve as a single point of contact across the care team.

Cancer Care Support Services

Cancer treatment affects more than the body. Lima Memorial provides support services including counseling, nutrition guidance, financial counseling and survivorship programming to help patients and families through every phase of care.

Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine combines conventional cancer treatment with complementary therapies to support whole-person healing during and after treatment. Lima Memorial's integrative oncology services include pain management, chiropractic care and mind-body support, delivered alongside active treatment to help patients manage side effects and maintain quality of life.

Cancer Registry

The Lima Memorial National Cancer Registry tracks patient outcomes and contributes anonymized data to national cancer research databases, supporting the broader effort to improve cancer care and outcomes. Registry participation is a requirement of Lima Memorial's Commission on Cancer accreditation and underpins the program's ongoing quality reporting and improvement process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cancer treatments are available at Lima Memorial?

Lima Memorial Cancer Institute offers comprehensive cancer care, including advanced radiation oncology (Varian TrueBeam™), medical oncology (chemotherapy, targeted therapies) and surgical oncology.

Where can I get cancer treatment near Lima, Ohio?

The Lima Memorial Cancer Institute provides accredited cancer treatment in Lima, Ohio, serving patients across Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Logan, Mercer, Putnam, Shelby and Van Wert counties. Services include medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, cancer diagnostics, oncology nurse navigation and integrative medicine, all delivered locally.

What is the difference between medical oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology?

Medical oncology uses systemic treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Radiation oncology uses targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells. Surgical oncology removes cancerous tumors through surgery. Most cancer treatment plans use a combination of two or all three, coordinated by a single care team. At Lima Memorial, all three specialties operate as one integrated program.

Do I need a referral to see an oncologist at Lima Memorial?

Self-referrals are accepted. You do not need a physician referral to request an appointment with a Lima Memorial oncologist. Coverage and referral requirements vary by insurance plan; your insurance card or our patient services team can confirm what your plan requires.

What is the Commission on Cancer accreditation?

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) is a program of the American College of Surgeons that accredits cancer programs meeting national standards for multidisciplinary care, data quality, patient outcomes and continuous quality improvement. The Lima Memorial Cancer Institute holds CoC accreditation, which means our program is independently verified against the same standards used by major cancer centers across the United States.

What is AI-powered early cancer detection?

Lima Memorial uses the Eon platform to identify incidental findings of potential lung cancer during routine imaging. When a patient receives a chest X-ray or other scan, Eon automatically reviews the image for potential lung nodules. If a nodule is identified, the patient is tracked and contacted to arrange further testing. This process is designed to catch potential lung cancer earlier, before symptoms develop, even when the original scan was ordered for a different reason.

Can I receive cancer treatment in Lima without traveling to Columbus or Toledo?

Yes. The Lima Memorial Cancer Institute provides full-spectrum cancer care locally: medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, diagnostic imaging, infusion services, oncology nurse navigation and survivorship support. For cases requiring subspecialty expertise, our partnership with the ProMedica Cancer Institute in Toledo connects patients to additional resources without disrupting the local care relationship.
