Lima Memorial Health System announces the commencement of its 125th anniversary celebrations on April 1, 2024, marking a significant milestone in Lima Memorial’s rich history of caring for our community. Since opening in 1899, Lima Memorial’s vision for health care has remained the same—providing our community with high-quality care in a family atmosphere.

Lima Memorial’s roots started more than 125 years ago when a group of community members recognized a need in the community and organized a play to raise initial funds for Lima’s first hospital. Lima Memorial, then called Lima City Hospital, opened at the corner of East Market and Scott Streets near the Ottawa River, the present site of Lima Senior High School. The new facility provided 13 beds: $7 per week for a non-private room and $10 per week for a private room. According to hospital records, 107 patients were admitted during the first year.

“It is an honor to have cared for our community for 125 years, and it is a privilege to remain the community’s only locally owned and operated health system,” shared Lynn Carpenter, Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Lima Memorial. “While we recognize our past, we look forward to celebrating our future and achieving milestones with our community for many years to come.”

The health system will host a variety of celebrations throughout 2024 to commemorate the 125th anniversary. Lima Memorial associates and members of the community are invited to join in an anniversary 5K run / walk on May 18 and a rededication ceremony on Memorial Day following the Memorial Day Parade.
