Dancing Through Life | Bethany’s Story with Angelman Syndrome
Dancing Through Life | Bethany's Story with Angelman Syndrome

At age three, Bethany was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects the nervous system. Children with Angelman syndrome often experience developmental delays, challenges with speech, balance and movement and may require lifelong support. Early on, her mother, Sarah, was told Bethany might never walk or talk.
Bethany began therapy with Lima Memorial’s therapy team shortly after her diagnosis. Through consistent physical, occupational and speech therapy, she slowly began building strength and confidence. Her need for a wheelchair turned into a need for leg braces and step by step, progress followed. Today at 12 years old, those leg braces are gone.
“Now she’s dancing,” her mother Sarah says with a smile, watching Bethany bop along to music as she walks down the hall with her therapists.
It’s a moment that once felt impossible. And now Sarah witnesses this every Friday during Bethany’s therapy sessions. For Sarah, the journey has been about more than milestones. It’s been about trust, connection and care.
“The Lima Memorial team is truly like family,” she shares. “When Bethany walks in, she knows where she is. She’s comfortable here.”
That comfort has made all the difference. Sarah trusts the team not only to care for Bethany, but to challenge her, encourage her and help her keep progressing.
“They push her to be the best she can be,” she says.
That support even goes beyond therapy sessions. Each February, the team proudly recognizes Angelman Syndrome Awareness Day by wearing blue, standing alongside Bethany and families like hers and celebrating every step of the journey.
And Bethany meets that encouragement with a spirit that’s unmistakably her own.
“She loves with her whole heart,” Sarah says. “Bethany loves like nobody’s business.”
Whether she’s in gym class, meeting new people or enjoying her latest interests like K-Pop Demon Hunters, everything around her feels bright and full of possibility.
“Everything is beautiful to her,” Sarah adds.
From a diagnosis filled with uncertainty to a future full of movement, joy and connection, Bethany’s story reflects what compassion, dedication and trust care can help make possible in our community.
