Joy, Faith and Life-Saving Care | Chuck’s Story

Chuck, a 74-year-old Lima resident, spent decades building homes through his construction business, Jacob’s Homes, while managing properties with the same care and compassion he shows his clients and tenants. He also serves as a devoted pastor and husband and is a proud grandfather and great-grandfather of 18. Despite his active lifestyle, Chuck has managed a congenital heart condition since birth, which is why he regularly sees his cardiologist, Dr. Pamela Gardner.
In May 2024, while preparing for a procedure for a separate health concern, Dr. Gardner recommended a precautionary heart catheterization before clearing him for the procedure. That decision was ultimately lifesaving, as the cath uncovered two of Chuck’s arteries were 85 to 90% blocked.
To Chuck, Lima Memorial’s care went far beyond delivering life-saving open-heart surgery. From the ICU to recovery, Chuck felt the attention, compassion and encouragement of every nurse, tech and doctor during every stage of his care. “They monitored me real close, and got me whatever I wanted or needed, which I thought was amazing,” Chuck recalls.
A pastor at heart, Chuck was known to keep spirits up with his wit and humor. “They told me, ‘We need to get you up and walking around the floor to spread some encouragement. You're lively and upbeat. We love it,’” Chuck shared about his nurses.
Chuck had also experienced a stroke in previous years and recognized the expertise and rapid response of the Lima Memorial team made all the difference. “They had the chopper on its way to the hospital within minutes to get me to Toledo. That quickness and knowing exactly what to do made a big difference.”
Reflecting on these moments of Great Care, Chuck emphasizes what sets Lima Memorial apart: “The concern was real. It wasn’t just a show. They were really concerned.” That genuine care, combined with skill and dedication, saved Chuck’s life and left a lasting impression.
“I was at the right place at the right time. I have nothing, nothing and I mean nothing, but good things to say about Lima Memorial and their people, staff and doctors.”
