Modified Barium Swallow Studies (pediatric and adult)
A licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, along with radiology personnel, performs the Modified Barium Swallow Study to examine swallow function. It is used to assess swallow function and to detect problems such as aspiration. Aspiration is the passing of liquids and/or solids into the person’s airway. This can lead to futher more serious health complications. Although most individuals cough when aspiration occurs, some fail to exhibit the typical coughing reaction and are described as having silent aspiration. Only a Modified Barium Swallow Study can accurately diagnose silent aspiration.

The Speech-Language Pathologist records the test on videotape to allow for detailed analysis of both physiology and function of the mouth, throat and esophagus before, during and after each swallow. The test requires the person to sit upright for 10-15 minutes while various food and liquid consistencies are presented in controlled portions. The Modified Barium Swallow Study not only diagnoses swallow problems; it also provided the Speech-Language Pathologist with information regarding treatment goals, diet consistency needs and swallow strategies to maximize swallow safety and comfort.
