Walking-the-Walk with Varicose Veins

Dr. Ronald R. Magee

Most people have a general understanding of varicose veins – those flesh, dark or purple-colored lines that appear on the legs, but few know specifically what causes them. In essence, varicose veins are actually the sign of increased pressure within weakened veins carrying blood to the heart from the legs. This condition can cause changes in the skin, increase the risk of vascular damage and contribute to ulcer formation.

If you have varicose veins, you’re part of a substantial group. A large U.S. survey, the Framington study, reports at least 20 to 25 million Americans are affected by some form of venous disease. Dr. Ronald R. Magee, board certified vascular surgeon with the Heart Institute of Northwest Ohio, states that treatment is often chosen for cosmetic reasons, but that other symptoms can also prompt medical attention.

“Sufferers may experience swelling in the ankles and legs, heaviness or tension, muscle aches and restlessness, cramps and itching,” Dr. Magee said. “Likely causes include prolonged standing, advanced age, high blood pressure, obesity, vein clots and inactivity. Your heredity can even be a factor.”

Women and men are just as likely to develop varicose veins, but spider veins are more common in the former. However, there are several methods that have been proven to reduce the severity of the symptoms. One is the use of graduated elastic compression stockings to prevent leg swelling and inhibit clotting. In addition, minimally invasive sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy are both outpatient procedures that have had strong records of success.

“To delay the onset or progression of varicose veins, it’s important to lead an active lifestyle, watch your blood pressure and control your weight,” Dr. Magee. “Here at The Heart and Vascular Institute at Lima Memorial, we can show you how.”
