Our State-of-the-Art Linear Accelerator offers the most current technology available in the targeted treatment of cancerous tumors. In addition, 3-D planning, with support from on-site physicists, is also available at The Medical Park.
IMRT, or Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, delivers radiation therapy to a cancerous tumor without giving too much radiation to the surrounding, healthy tissue. IMRT has fewer side effects because less radiation is delivered to healthy tissues, which in turn helps patients and families better cope with the illness. The Cancer Institute of Lima Memorial is one of a few hospitals outside of a university setting utilizing IMRT to fight cancer. Prostate and head and neck cancers are the main types of cancers treated with IMRT, although the system is used for various other qualifying cancers.
Prostate Brachytherapy is performed by a board certified radiation oncologist, who guided by ultrasound, places thin, relatively low-dose radiation tubes, also called seeds, into the prostate to shrink a tumor. These seeds are the size of a grain of rice and cause virtually no discomfort. This treatment guards against cancerous prostate cells spreading to nearby lymph nodes and reduces the risk of cancer further spreading outside the pelvic area.
