The Balance Center is a multidisciplinary approach to the
identification and treatment of individuals suffering from
dizziness or imbalance. We work closely with the patient's
referring physician completing necessary testing to aid in the
identification of the etiology for the patient's symptoms. We then
make recommendations regarding if the patient would be appropriate
for entry into a vestibular rehabilitation or balance retraining
regimen.
Common symptoms:
- Dizziness
- Off balance
- Spinning sensations (either the room spinning or them
spinning)
- Sensation of "after motion" following quick head movements
- Trouble walking in the dark
What professionals make up the
Center?
- Audiologist: The audiologist assesses the patient first with a
typically battery of tests including; a detailed case history, Videonystagmography(VNG)/Electronystagmography(ENG),
a hearing evaluation, Tympanometry, and the Somatosensory
Organization Test. Once these tests are performed, the audiologist
will analyze the results and send a report to the referring
physician with recommendations regarding whether the patient would
be a candidate for further services.
- Physical Therapist: The physical therapist will further
evaluate the patients functional balance aswell as their strength,
range of motion, sensation, coordination, posture, and occulomotor
skills. They will then formulate a treatment plan to address the
patient's current status.
- Occupational Therapist: The occupational therapist will address
the items listed above in addition to visual acuity, reflex and
range of motion, and various scales to assess the effect this
disorder is having on the patient's daily
activity.
