The da Vinci surgical robot at the Timmermeister Family Surgery Center is one of the most remarkable advances in surgical technology. The robot helps surgeons conduct complex surgeries while using a minimally invasive approach.
In a da Vinci robotic-assisted procedure, the robot does not actually perform the procedure. Instead, the specially designed robot allows the surgeon to see and perform an operation by remote control, manipulating extremely small cameras and surgical equipment from outside the body. The surgeon controls the robot while sitting at a console. A very small camera system gives the surgeon a binocular-like 3-D image of the procedure. Two foot pedals and two hand controllers are used to control extremely precise movements of tiny surgical tools.
For patients, surgery performed with the help of the da Vinci system offers all the benefits of a minimally invasive procedure: a very small incision, less pain, less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery, and faster return to normal daily activities. Frequently used for prostatectomies and gynocologic surgical procedures, the da Vinci system reflects a growing trend in robotic surgery nationwide.
